  • Announcements for this class are posted here.
What are announcements about this class?  Homework assignments, changes in due dates, quiz announcements, links to anything interesting about phonology and linguistics in general.

  • Audio files posted
Additional audio files are now posted under "Assignments and Quizzes":
    (1)  Practice Quiz  = Haitian quiz data  (previously posted)
    (2)  Quiz 1 and Quiz 1 - more practice  =  Persian quiz data
This includes a sound file named "Persian1 #2+ George.wav" which gives the Persian name "Zhala" and the English name "George" sou you can compare the voiced post-alveolar fricative (in initial position) in "Zhala" with the voiced post-alveolar affricate (in initial and final position) in "George".  "George was picked because the English vowel is similar to the Persian vowel,  so that vowel effects on the consonant are minimized.
    (3)  The English analysis we are starting using Praat.  = Audio files 443-543 2016
You have two English sentences that you can use for segmentation practice:
"GC This is a test 2016.wav"
        "GC End of test.wav"
I encourage you to also record your own sentences to work with.

  • Make-up assignment for PS-2 posted

Most students already have full credit for PS-2.  These students are welcome to do this extra problem,  but there is no extra credit fort doing it.

A few students got a note on their corrected PS-2,  “For full credit,  complete the make-up problem set.”  This is that make-up problem set.  If you turn in a satisfactory solution to this PS within two weeks,  you will get full credit for PS-2.  If you do not turn it in,  you will get half credit.

  • Optional Review Classes
We now have a classroom for the optional review classes.  We couldn’t get a room at the preferred time Tuesday 3:30-5:30;  what we have is Avery 12 Tuesday 4:15-6:15.  I’ll be there this Tuesday (30 August);  we can see how this works and make adjustments as needed.

  • Phonetics Assignment 1-2

Phonetics Assignment 1-2 now appears under "Assignments and Quizzes".  This is additional reading only;  there’s nothing to turn in beyond the material you already have from Phonetics Assignment 1-1.   There’s 39 pages from Ladefoged and 20 pages from Odden,  some of which you’ve looked at already.  I recommend giving it all at least a first pass before Tuesday’s class;  bring questions to class or office hours or the review class.

The assignment also includes a couple of pages of notes on the Ladefoged reading,  picking out high priority parts and talking about how the reading fits with the larger course.  I recommend skimming these notes before starting the reading.
